CHALLENGES

Family CHALLENGE

The Family MYM Challenge is an opportunity for families to try different ways to be healthy together and create positive connections. The challenge provides different ideas on how families can move together, cook and eat together, practice mindfulness and build positive coping strategies, as well as learn about the 40 Developmental Assets to help their kids grow up great. The challenge is offered in various communities across Central Zone. Contact us for more information about how to sign up for the Red Deer challenge in February and other opportunities.

SCHOOL CHALLENGE

The school challenge runs during Mental Health Awareness week in May. The challenge encourages all K-12 schools across Central Zone to take part. The goal is to increase awareness on the importance of mental health and how to improve mental health through healthy lifestyles practices. The school is encouraged to have the students read daily messages to the entire school and share one way to incorporate a healthy choice each day. Students can use the ideas provided or get creative and make their own.

COMMUNITy

The MYM program also aims to be involved in our communities. Our goal is to share the MYM message with other programs and projects that also make mental and physical health a priority. This includes community presentations, displays and projects like the Grow Kids event in Red Deer, the Community Better ParticipACTION challenge, and the spray-painted games for families to get active in local parks.

Participaction community better CHALLENGE

Every June ParticipACTION hosts a Community Better Challenge for all communities across Canada to participate in. The challenge is to encourage citizens to get active and track their activity minutes for their community. The Red Deer MYM program got on board to promote this challenge for the community in 2019. The Red Deer community was proud to take home the title of the "Most Active Community in Canada" in 2022 and the $100,000 prize. In 2023 Red Deer won the challenge in Alberta. The challenge is a great way for communities to come together to connect through physical activity. We encourage your community to get involved this June.

This June you can help your community by taking the individual activity pledge on the ParticipACTION website. You only have to do this once, adding an e-mail and postal code which will be counted towards your community.

The more people that sign up the better the chances of your community winning, so please share this with your friends and family.

In Red Deer we are kicking off the challenge with a FREE Community Better Red Deer Walk-Run.

  • FREE Registration for EVERYONE!

  • Choose your distance: Walk or Run 1km/3km/ or 5km

spray painted games

The spray painting of interactive games in the community of Red Deer is a partnership between: The MYM program, SPARC Red Deer, the City of Red Deer and Red Deer Polytechnic. We have now spray painted 28 different locations in our city at schools, parks and recreation centres. There is never a time that you do not see people hopping, skipping, jumping and having fun with these games. We have seen every age from childcare provides with little children, school aged children, teenagers, adults and older adults having fun and connecting through play! You will often see us spray painting with local youth to engage them in giving back to the community and having fun while being creative. Many other communities have also added the games to their community parks. We encourage you to learn more and think about adding these games to your community. We can provide you with the information on how to book the stencils with RDP and purchase the paint. Then it is up to you to create your painting crew!
